Audax Randonneurs

Randonneuring is a branch of cycling that involves long rides to test endurance and self-sufficiency.  Randonneurs (lit., tourists) have to complete pre-plotted routes, usually over set distances from 100 km to more than 1 000 km, within a time limit.

Audax Randonneurs South Africa (Aurasan) is the organising body for Randonnees in South Africa.

For most randonneurs, the aim is to complete the event known as Paris-Brest-Paris. Held every four years in the European summer, Paris-Brest covers a little over 1 200 km and has to be completed within 90 hours. In 2007 it attracted more than 5 000 entries. That's me on the right, taking part in 2007. I made it to 780 km before I abandoned because of a knee injury (image courtesy maindruphoto).

To qualify for Paris-Brest-Paris, a rider has to finish, in the preceding summer, a series of rides comprising distances of 200, 300, 400 and 600 km. Several routes have been approved for South Africa. You can get Western Cape routes from the owner of this blog in spreadsheet format as text cue sheets, as image files, or for those with GPS as tracklogs or routes in GPX format.

See here for a history of  Audax and read about Tonia Cason, whom I met on the train back from Loudeac after I'd bailed. South African Audax boss Eddie Thomlinson can be reached at aurasan "*" global.co.za (replace * with @).
